Tech Startups tackle migration challenges at The Global Forum on Migration & Development
The annual Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) brought together innovators and stakeholders to address the complex issues surrounding migration.
This year, a particular focus was placed on tech startups working on climate-related solutions and fostering dignified employment opportunities.
The IOE Migration Challenge, a collaboration between the IOE and Seedstars, recognized leading startups in this space. The prestigious judging panel, including industry leaders like Nicolas Goldstein, Founder of Talenteum.com , Anthony Corbaz, Director Switzerland Digital and June Farmer, Executive Director at Oracle awarded Mohirdev from Uzbekistan the top prize.
Why Mohirdev Stood Out:
Addressing a pressing need: Mohirdev provides re-skilling and up-skilling solutions for migrants in an under-served region, ultimately enabling access to dignified employment.
Strategic focus: Their commitment to remote work and future of work
Strong partnerships: Mohirdev has demonstrated a successful public-private partnership, a key ingredient for lasting impact.
Joining Mohirdev on the podium were Inclusivity Solutions (Rwanda) and Turing Space (Taiwan) as first and second runner-up, respectively.
Seeds of Innovation Across Regions:
This year’s challenge saw participation from startups across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Central and Eastern Europe. Notably, 70% of the world’s international migrant population are foreign labor migrants, driven by various factors like climate change and economic disparity. Technology plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges.
For four years, the IOE Migration Challenge has successfully bridged the gap between the tech startup scene and the GFMD stakeholder community. This collaboration aims to unlock sustainable solutions for managing migration and provide promising startups with a platform for growth.
